چکیده

Anaerobic digestion of high solids chicken manure as a single substrate was conducted at laboratory scale with a reaction volume of 10 l. The organic loading rate was increased gradually from 2.2 to 3.9 gVS l -1 d -1 . To reduce the amount of inhibiting ammonia in the process technical stripping of ammonia was applied, yielding ammonia-phosphate or ammonia-sulfate as valuable side-products. A high specific biogas yield of 623 mlN g -1 VS -1 was produced, despite the high level of free ammonia and of total ammonia nitrogen of up to 1 g/l and above 5 g/l, respectively. The presented results show the technical possibility to use chicken manure as a single substrate for an anaerobic process and demonstrate how to overcome the limitations of the use of substrates with high nitrogen content.

Effects of Temperature and Carbon-Nitrogen (C/N) Ratio on the Performance of Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Dairy Manure, Chicken Manure and Rice Straw: Focusing on Ammonia Inhibition

Anaerobic digestion is a promising alternative to disposal organic waste and co-digestion of mixed organic wastes has recently attracted more interest. This study investigated the effects of temperature and carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratio on the performance of anaerobic co-digestion of dairy manure (DM), chicken manure (CM) and rice straw (RS). We found that increased temperature improved the metha...

Effect of Physical and Chemical Operating Parameters on Anaerobic Digestion of Manure and Biogas Production: A Review

Introduction: The need for food produced from animal husbandry has made it a growing industry which result in increment of livestock waste. On the basis of environmental and economic considerations, these materials require treatment and management. Anaerobic digestion and creation of biogas are the most effective methods of waste management. Several parameters affect the anaerobic digestion of ...

Simultaneous Ammonia removal and Methane Production from Chicken Manure under Dry Thermophilic Condition

In a trail to improve and reduce the cost of dry anaerobic fermentation of chicken manure with ammonia stripping through biogas recycling, raw chicken manure (RCM) is used as a sole substrate instead of using treated chicken manure (TCM) or mixture of TCM:RCM (1:1) used previously. Biogas produced was ranged from 23.555 L kg-CM-1 with methane percentage of 70 to 85%, the amount which is 61 to 9...

Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal.

Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more eff...

Modeling of ammonia speciation in anaerobic digesters.

Anaerobic digestion of high-nitrogen wastes such as animal manure can be inhibited by high concentrations of un-ionized ammonia, NH(3) (aq). Understanding the toxicity of NH(3) (aq) to anaerobic digestion requires a method for determining its concentration. Previous work on ammonia toxicity in anaerobic digesters has utilized a simple equilibrium calculation for estimating NH(3) (aq) concentrat...
